Andrew Williams

Andrew Williams

Baritone

Andrew Williams is one of Australia’s most distinguished and versatile baritones. In 2024, he
returned to Opera Australia as Marcello in the national tour of Puccini’s La Bohème, and also
travelled to Italy for his first engagement at Teatro alla Scala, where he rehearsed and covered the
role of Crébillon in Puccini’s La Rondine under the baton of Riccardo Chailly.

Andrew made his Opera Australia mainstage debut in 2023 as Masetto in Sir David McVicar’s
production of Don Giovanni, earning praise for his “interestingly complex take” (Bachtrack, Alex
Nguyen). He had previously toured nationally with OA as Figaro in Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia
in both 2022 and 2023. His other roles with the company include Heraldo in Otello, as well as
covering Marcello in La Bohème and Morales in Carmen. He also appears regularly in OA’s popular
Great Opera Hits concerts at the Sydney Opera House.

Andrew has received high acclaim in competition, winning the Lady Fairfax La Scala Award from
the Opera Foundation for Young Australians in 2023, the Encouragement Prize from the German-
Australian Opera Grant in 2020, and the Foundation Prize in the Joan Sutherland and Richard
Bonynge Bel Canto Award in 2018.

On the concert stage, Andrew has performed a wide range of repertoire, appearing as a soloist in
works including J.S. Bach’s BWV 42 and Magnificat, Dvořák’s Stabat Mater, Handel’s Messiah,
Mendelssohn’s Paulus, and Nielsen’s Third Symphony.

A former member of Opera Australia’s prestigious Moffatt Oxenbould Young Artist Program
(2022–2023), Andrew developed his technique and artistry under the leadership of several industry
professionals. He holds both a Bachelor of Music (Performance) and an Advanced Diploma of
Opera – both completed on scholarship – from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where he
performed numerous principal roles including Figaro (Le Nozze di Figaro), Bob (The Old Maid and
the Thief
), and Friedrich Bhaer (Little Women).

Andrew will return to Opera Australia in 2025 to reprise the role of Marcello in their La Bohème
tour and is looking forward to presenting a solo recital at the Italian Consulate in Sydney in June, in
collaboration with the Opera Foundation for Young Australians.

Recipient of the Stars of Tomorrow 2025 First prize.
